Coldplay are back with a new Max Martin-produced single, “Higher Power.”
In the accompanying music video, the band deliver the song in a spirited outdoor performance, replete with dancing alien holograms. “That you’ve got a higher power / Got me singing every second / Dancing evеry hour,” Chris Martin sings on top of polished pop production.
“‘Higher Power’ is a song that arrived on a little keyboard and a bathroom sink at the start of 2020,” the band shared on social media.
The song comes as Coldplay continue to tease their upcoming album with a Twitter account called Alien Radio FM, which has been retweeting cryptic tweets and information from the site alienradio.fm. Mysterious runes and alien symbols have also been appearing on billboards in cities like London and New York.
Coldplay launched “Higher Power” in interstellar fashion, sharing the song with Thomas Pesquet, a French astronaut on the International Space Station. “Right now we aren’t able to play for anybody on Earth, so we thought we’d just play for you,” Martin told Pesquet.
Coldplay’s last album was their 2019 double album Everyday Life, which included tracks “Daddy,” “Champion of the World” and “Orphans”—the latter of which Max Martin had also produced. The album was nominated for an Album of the Year Grammy in 2021, in a field that included entries from Haim, Jacob Collier, Black Pumas and Jhené Aiko.
Coldplay will be opening the 2021 BRIT Awards on May 11 with a performance of “Higher Ground.” Watch the music video here:
