Since following up “Call Me Maybe” with the acclaimed album EMOTION in 2015, Carly Rae Jepsen has become something of a pop icon. Nobody crafts sonic euphoric the way the Canadian singer-songwriter does, and this new single, “Party for One,” is further proof.
Produced by Captain Cuts and Hightower, the uptempo track is all about getting your groove back after calling time on a relationship. “Tried to let it go and say I’m over you / I’m not over you / But I’m trying,” Jepsen sings with her signature tears-on-the-dancefloor flair. The chorus gives everything a more hopeful spin: “Party for one / If you don’t care about me / I’ll just dance by myself,” she declares. It’s the sort of carefree call-to-arms that plenty of listeners will relate to.
“To me ‘Party for One’ is an anthem of what it is to celebrate time with yourself, which is a hard thing for people to really enjoy sometimes, and it’s something I’m learning to do more and more,” Jepsen said in a statement. “This song represents a lot of what this album is about for me, which is romantic love but self-love, too.”
The video for the track is also out. Watch the pop star and an eccentric bunch of guests check into a hotel to throw their own parties—for one, of course.
