Carly Rae Jepsen’s realistic holiday song is perfect for 2020

“It’s Not Christmas Till Somebody Cries” is out now.

Carly Rae Jepsen has released “It’s Not Christmas Till Somebody Cries,” a realistic holiday song that’s perfect for this chaotic year.

Instead of perfect snowfall or holiday cheer, the Canadian pop star sings about the inevitable disagreements and conflicts that spark when families come together: “My boyfriend is a vegan, so they fed him fish / My uncle made it worse by talking politics / I had a few opinions, might have started a fight, well / It’s not Christmas till somebody cries.”

“I love the old-fashioned movies and the family traditions and the excitement of gifting presents and decorating the tree and and and… my list is endless,” Jepsen said of the song in a statement. “But each year the pressure to have the perfect Christmas always ends in tears. I call it Christmas versus expectation.”

In September, Jepsen collaborated with singer-songwriter mxmtoon on the song “ok on your own.” The month prior, she celebrated the fifth anniversary of her album Emotion by releasing two bonus tracks, and also dropped “Me and the Boys in the Band,” a light-hearted ode to her bandmates.
