Queen of K-pop BoA has commemorated the two-decade mark in her career in spectacular fashion, with the release of her much-anticipated tenth album, Better.
The 11-track project is the culmination of one and a half years of work for the artist, who says the process of making the album led her to reflect on her relationship with her art.
“I did think about what would make the best 20th anniversary album and concluded it should be about the music I want to do now. If I had started to put too much meaning into it, I feel that the album would never have come out,” she said in a livestreamed press conference ahead of the release, according to Yonhap.
Better showcases BoA’s artistic range, featuring such bangers as title track “Better,” composed and written by SM Entertainment’s in-house producer Yoo Young-jin, upbeat party anthem “Honey & Diamonds,” as well as more dialed-back ballads like “Gravity.”
Three of the songs—“Cloud,” “All That Jazz” and “Little Bird”—were produced by BoA, who also wrote the lyrics for another track, “LOVE.” Accompanying the record’s release is a sultry music video for title track “Better” that features the K-pop idol performing in a giant cage with a troupe of dancers.
BoA’s comeback follows the release of her Japanese-language single “I Believe” last month and “Starry Night” in December 2019. Earlier this year, girl group Red Velvet also shared a cover of BoA’s 2003 hit “Milky Way,” as part of their label SM Entertainment’s Our Beloved BoA series.
