BLACKPINK member Rosé has shared her highly anticipated debut solo project R.
The project arrived alongside a cinematic visual for lead single “On the Ground.” The clip follows Rosé as she wanders around an empty city before it fittingly ends with her levitating over a field of roses. “Every day, every night / I been thinkin’ back on you and I / Every day, every night / I worked my whole life / Just to get it right, just to be liked / Look at me, I’m never coming down,” she sings on the hook.
Also featured on the project is “Gone,” a song first previewed during BLACKPINK’s virtual concert The Show in January. Both tracks—which were sung in English—were co-written by Rosé with the help of songwriters such as Jon Bellion and Jorgen Odegard.
“Since I’ve been preparing for this album for such a long time and our fans have been waiting for it as well, I wanted it to be satisfactory,” Rosé said in an online press conference, per The Korea Herald. “So from the design of the album to my first songwriting participation, I tried to express my honest self through R.”
She added: “In the process of making this album, I got to look into myself, realizing how much I love music and that I am the kind of a person who learns from music and gets comforted by it.”
Rosé is the second member of BLACKPINK to release solo material, following Jennie’s single “SOLO” in 2018. R also follows the group’s first full-length project The Album, which arrived last October. The eight-track record included the songs “How You Like That,” “Pretty Savage” as well as collaborations with Selena Gomez and Cardi B.
