Beyoncé announces new visual album, ‘Black is King’

The film is based on music from ‘The Lion King: The Gift.’

Beyoncé has announced a new visual album, Black is King.

The upcoming musical film is based on music from The Lion King: The Gift, the 2019 album that Bey curated and executive-produced. She also voiced the character Nala in the 2019 remake of The Lion King.

According to a press release from Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment, the visual “reimagines the lessons of The Lion King for today’s young kings and queens in search of their own crowns.”

Black is King was in production for one year and will feature a reportedly diverse cast and crew. Guest musicians from The Lion King: The Gift are also set to appear in the visual album, though no specific names were given. Black is King will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on July 31.

The visual album’s announcement follows “Black Parade,” the single Beyoncé surprise-released to commemorate Juneteenth (June 19). The song celebrated the pop star’s heritage, with proceeds from the track going towards the Black Business Impact Fund of Beyoncé’s BeyGOOD charity.
