Benny Blanco, Juice WRLD get emo on “Roses”

Also featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco.

Benny Blanco’s new EP, Friends Keep Secrets, is out today and it features “Roses,” a collab with Juice WRLD and Brendon Urie.

In terms of production, “Roses” is a bit of a swerve from Blanco’s chart-smashing “Eastside.” It packs more bass and Auto-Tune, and is less cheery on the whole. Not that you’d expect anything else from a link-up between two generations of emo icons.

The pair take turns to lament over heartbreak and unrequited love before connecting on the chorus: “Roses are red, violets are blue / My heart is dead, I’m such a fool / Why did I fall for you? / I gave it all for you.”

“It’s just so cool to see both of these guys from such different worlds coming together and just really vibing on the same shit,” Blanco told Zane Lowe of Beats 1 in a recent interview. “Juice knows exactly where he was the first time he heard Panic! at the Disco, ‘I Write Sins Not Tragedies.’ [And] Brendon knows exactly where he was the first time he heard Juice WRLD. They’re both equally important to each other’s lives.”
