New Zealand pop star BENEE has released “Plain,” a collaboration with Lily Allen and Flo Milli.
Over mellow, psychedelic-leaning instrumentals, BENEE and Allen exchange verses that eviscerate a former flame. Milli jumps in towards the end with jaunty bars that contrast with the two singers’ chilled-out delivery.
“I wanted to make it a song someone could listen to when they find out their ex is with someone new,” the Kiwi artist explained in a statement. “The feeling sucks, so I wanted ‘Plain’ to make ya feel like you have the upper hand. Lily and Flo Milli both have such cool sass, and both their verses really elevated the track!”
“Plain” is taken from her debut album Hey u x. The LP will also include BENEE’s previous singles “Night Garden” and “Snail,” alongside 2019 EP Stella & Steve megahit “Supalonely,” featuring Gus Dapperton. Grimes, Mallrat, Kenny Beats, Bakar and Muroki will also contribute to Hey u x.
BENEE also launched her own label Olive last week, signing Muroki as her first artist. She had previously played his music to Elton John on his radio show and booked the indie musician to open her recent run of hometown shows.
Hey u x will arrive on November 13 via Republic Records. Listen to “Plain” below:
