Ashnikko has collaborated with none other than Grimes for her new single, “Cry.”
Produced by Ebenezer, the song is about being betrayed by a close friend and the hurt that comes after, Ashnikko revealed in an Instagram comment. “It is about my (now ex) best friend who slept with my (now ex) boyfriend behind my back,” the singer wrote. “I was so heartbroken and mad at her for so long for betraying me. It wasn’t even about the boy anymore (he was dispensable lol). I write songs to help me get over things, and writing this song a year and a half ago did just that.”
In the accompanying animated sci-fi visual, Ashnikko gets into a scuffle with a green-haired woman before gruesomely snapping her nemesis in half. The clip also flashes back to a time when the singer was holed up alone in a spaceship far away from earth. She’s visited by Grimes (a fairy godmother in the form of an alien nymph), who gives her the strength to confront her problems.
“Cry” is the second single from Ashnikko’s forthcoming EP, following February’s “Tantrum.” Due out sometime later this year, the EP is a follow-up to the singer’s 2019 project, Hi, it’s Me. Meanwhile, the collab marks Grimes’ first release since her fifth studio LP, Miss Anthropocene. The pop star also recently welcomed her first child with tech mogul Elon Musk.
