5 Seconds of Summer want things to be “Easier”

A taste of their new, darker sound.

Australian boyband 5 Seconds of Summer are back with a New Wave-inspired single, “Easier.”

The moody synth pop track dropped alongside a dramatic video. In the Grant Singer-directed clip, the boys perform the song in a dimly lit cave while tied up or close to drowning. “Is it easier to stay, is it easier to go? I don’t wanna know, oh / But I know that I’m never, ever gonna change / And you know that you’re always gonna stay the same,” frontman Luke Hemmings sings.

“‘Easier’ is the most confident we have been in the first song to be released off one of our records,” Hemmings said in a press release. “Visually and sonically it feels like we took what we uncovered about ourselves as a band on the last album and honed in on that sound and aura.”

“Easier” is the group’s first release since signing with Interscope. The track follows “Who Do You Love,” their February single with The Chainsmokers.
