Testament guitarist Alex Skolnick has put his own “moody,” jazzy spin on Dua Lipa’s pop hit “Don’t Start Now.”
Skolnick covered the song—which is from the British pop star’s latest album, Future Nostalgia—after he was challenged by Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela. “Not just anybody could get me to do this, but this is RyG we’re talking about (everyone else, don’t even think about it),” Skolnick said in the video description.
His cover, as Skolnick put it, is “ambient/moody, which seems to fit the emotion being expressed in the lyrics.” Its slower tempo is “a bit inspired by Pink Floyd.”
After Skolnick takes on the main melody of “Don’t Start Now”—which he praised as “quite unique and contagious”—he took the liberty of turning it into a jazzy, one-man jam.
The thrash guitarist’s Dua Lipa cover comes about a week after he joined members of Anthrax and Suicidal Tendencies to play Rush’s “YYZ.” Earlier this month, Testament released their new album, Titans of Creation, which featured the songs “Children of the Next Level” and “Night of the Witch.”
