Slash, Steve Vai, Zakk Wylde… Many rockers have taken on “The Star-spangled Banner” at sporting events over the years, and Kirk Hammett’s the latest one to throw his hat in the ring.
Or should we say “field.” At yesterday’s San Francisco Giants game at AT&T Park, the Metallica guitarist ripped into the national anthem with nothing more than his six-string, a wah pedal and an amp. While certainly not as virtuosic as Hendrix’s iconic Woodstock performance, it’s a searing, incendiary solo that rocked the rafters.
The event was part of Metallica Night, the Giants’ annual celebration of the Bay Area band. “It’s great. It’s a lot of fun,” Hammett told Blabbermouth about the experience. “It’s a good opportunity for us to interact with our home team, hometown, and interact with the people of the Bay Area in San Francisco. And for me, it’s a lot of fun to be able to play the national anthem.”
