Watch Avenged Sevenfold’s acoustic rendition of “So Far Away”

They took a request from a young fan in the front row at the Grammy Museum.

Last year, Avenged Sevenfold released an unusual album: an acoustic collection of live tracks recorded at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. Now, the metal heavyweights have released a video of their stripped-down performance of “So Far Away.”

It seems the band hadn’t planned to perform the Nightmare track—and The Rev tribute—in the first place, and the video captures how it ended up on the setlist: A boy in the front row had requested the song.

M Shadows agreed to try the first verse, so the young fan wouldn’t cry, but the band ended up performing the whole song instead. Though Shadows exclaimed it was “gonna be so bad” at the outset, A7X ultimately turned out a moving rendition that really let his vocals, and the song’s emotional subject matter, shine.
