When he’s not fronting Nine Inch Nails, Trent Reznor composes music for film and TV with longtime collaborator Atticus Ross. You can now hear “Outside” from their latest project: the soundtrack for the new Netflix thriller, Bird Box.
The piano-driven track clocks in just shy of 13 eerie, ambient minutes—and that’s just the abridged version. It’s a spine-tingling listen, and you don’t need to have seen Bird Box to appreciate it.
“Like all soundtrack records we release, we aim for these to play like albums that take you on a journey and can exist as companion pieces to the films and as their own separate works,” Reznor and Ross wrote in a message announcing the score’s release.
The score, which is now available for purchase here ahead of its release on streaming services later this month, is a ‘director’s cut’ of sorts. “We created a significant amount of music and conceptual sound for Bird Box, a lot of which never made it to your ears in the final version of the film,” they explained. “We’ve decided to present you with this version of the soundtrack record that represents what Bird Box is to us. We hope you enjoy.”
