Thou and Emma Ruth Rundle have joined forces on new album May Our Chambers Be Full, which they’ve announced with the song “Ancestral Recall.”
“Ancestral Recall” is a muscular, dynamic track loaded with vicious guitar riffs and Rundle’s grandiose, gothic vocals. A slew of sonic ideas play out in quick succession across the track’s runtime, including a short-lived reprieve from Thou guitarist Andy Gibb’s wall of distortion.
“Andy originally wrote the riffs and I believe I referred to it as the Guitar Hero jam,” Rundle recalled in a statement. “It was hard for me to keep up and I felt like I was doing an obstacle course (in the best way). Because of the differences in our guitar tunings, it was difficult for me to match the rest exactly and I ended up coming with a single note passage to play over the most difficult section.
“For me this was a good example of the collaboration and that I was able to express my style despite my limitations in a way that added to Andy’s riff. Working with him on guitars was a challenge, but most rewarding, and I feel proud of our child.”
The album’s announcement follows Thou and Rundle’s 2019 tour, which saw them perform the occasional collaborative sets. The shows were booked to promote Thou and Rundle’s most recent albums, 2018’s Magus and On Dark Horses, respectively.
In June, Thou released a new album of Nirvana covers titled Blessings of the Highest Order. It included renditions of “Aneurysm,” “School” and “In Bloom.”
