Sunn O))) have released Life Metal, the first of two albums they’ll deliver this year.

Recorded and mixed on tape by none other than Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies, Shellac), Life Metal lets some light into Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley’s cold, droney universe. “[Albini] approached Sunn O))) in a way that a cinematographer would,” Anderson told Guitar.com in a recent interview. “Our sound and setup were established and he was just capturing it in as realistic a manner as possible.”

Besides Albini, other collaborators who helped bring the album to, well, life are longtime collaborator and synthesist Tos Nieuwenhuizen, Chicago bassist Tim Midyett and Icelandic musician Hildur Guðnadóttir, who sings on the opener “Between Sleipnir’s Breaths.”

Sunn O))) spent two weeks recording with Albini, fruitful sessions which also spawned a second album, Pyroclasts, that will be released later this year.
