Sunn O))) announce new album, ‘Life Metal’

It’s one of two albums, recorded with Steve Albini, that the drone lords will deliver this year.

Ready your eardrums: Sunn O))) have announced not one but two new albums, both recorded with Steve Albini. The first, titled Life Metal, will be out in April, and the second, Pyroclasts, will be released in fall.

As a press release tells it, Life Metal took shape in various stages and settings. Sunn O))) co-founders Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson convened in Los Angeles twice last spring to write, conceptualize and develop riffs. Pre-production took place in Dave Grohl’s 606 studios, and recording—an entirely analog process—at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio studios in Chicago.

O’Malley and Anderson had wanted to record from the outset with Albini, who apparently took their call and said, “Sure, this will be fun. I have no idea what is going to happen.” As it turns out, their two weeks of recording were so fruitful, they also spawned a second album, the “more meditative” Pyroclasts.
