Slipknot have released a new single, “Birth of the Cruel.” It previews We Are Not Your Kind, their long-awaited sixth album.

The brutal track layers frontman Corey Taylor’s menacing vocals over roaring guitars and rapid drums. “Listen to this, the lesson is / Never underestimate the agony, death of the fool / Birth of the cruel,” he bellows on the chorus.

The song’s title appears to be a play on the classic Miles Davis LP, Birth of the Cool. It arrived with a creepy vertical video, featuring the six masked men of Slipknot and glitchy effects.

We Are Not Your Kind is due out this Friday, and includes the previously released singles “Unsainted” and “Solway Firth.” It will be Slipknot’s first studio record since 2014’s .5: The Gray Chapter.

“People aren’t ready for [the new album], man. It’s really, really good,” Taylor told Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s Beats 1 on Monday. “I mean, don’t get me wrong: Those [previous] albums have great songs on them. But as far as a whole, it just didn’t have that same vitality that the earlier stuff did. I feel like this one really captures what we’ve tried to do.”
