Nine Inch Nails release “God Break Down the Door”

They're breaking some ground on the music front, too.

Nine Inch Nails are pioneers of contemporary industrial rock. But on their latest release, you’ll have to listen a little closer to find those heavy sounds they popularized in the ’90s.

“God Break Down the Door,” which is set to feature on the band’s upcoming Bad Witch EP, is a pulsing, electronic-infused alt-rock track. It kicks off at an uptempo pace from the first few bars and barely lets up. Don’t think that this is a case of the rock legends going full dance, though—there’s enough haunted distortion in there to feel distinctly NIN.

In a recent interview with Beats 1, frontman Trent Reznor discussed how the track came about. “I was just kind of going. An hour performance kind of turned into this thing that felt like we hadn’t been there before, and that started to reveal a whole different character,” he said. “The space changed and then we felt motivated. When it came time to sing, I was really just trying things out, just to see. I never had the courage to sing like that; I didn’t know I could sing.”
