Mastodon mark 20 years as a band this year, an anniversary they’re commemorating with the release of Medium Rarities.
The 16-track album collects live songs, instrumentals, previously unreleased songs like “Fallen Torches” and covers of Butthole Surfers and The Flaming Lips.
It also includes Mastodon’s musical contributions to television: “White Walker” was recorded for HBO’s 2015 Game of Thrones mixtape (two years later, Mastodon would make cameos as White Walkers in a season finale), and “Cut You Up With a Linoleum Knife” was recorded for the Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters. Mastodon also recently contributed the new song “Rufus Lives” to the soundtrack of Bill & Ted Face the Music, though it’s not on Medium Rarities.
The band next plan to get back in the studio, drummer Brann Dailor recently told American Songwriter, and demo enough songs for three new records—but there’s no telling when they’ll release new music.
“I feel like the whole industry is kind of waiting by the phone for results,” Dailor said. “There’s lots of questions and when we reopen for concerts there’s going to be 10,000 bands that want to tour the same month. So, do you put a record out because people need it right now and tour later? We just don’t know. It’s the most bizarre time that we’ve experienced, I feel like our industry is going to be the last to come back and like sports, we’re going to have to figure out a way around it. But there’s just no substitute, nothing comes close to actually being there at a concert. I just wish we could go back.”
