Machine Head’s Rob Flynn plays “Eruption” in honor of Eddie Van Halen

Paying tribute the way he knows best.

Machine Head’s Rob Flynn has shared a guitar cover of Van Halen’s “Eruption” to pay tribute to the band’s late guitarist Eddie Van Halen, who died earlier this week.

Flynn was one of thousands of fans and musicians around the world mourning the iconic guitarist, who passed on October 6 following a battle with cancer. In an emotional Instagram post, Flynn eulogized Van Halen, whom he called the “GOAT” [greatest of all time] and “one in a billion.”

“Guitarists still haven’t caught up to what he’s accomplished on those first five records,” Flynn wrote. “I was just playing ‘Eruption’ two days ago at the request of a fan, thinking, goddamn this song is still so fucking hard to play over 40 years later. And that fucking guitar tone… Seriously… That fucking guitar tone even in this day and age is complete savagery.”

Flynn then uploaded a video of himself shredding on “Eruption,” adding that “nothing will ever be as good as the original, but I’m gonna keep on trying every day, like I have for 30 years, to get that good.”

The Machine Head frontman has also recorded an episode of his podcast, No F’n Regrets with Rob Flynn, paying tribute to Eddie Van Halen. Listen to it here, and watch Flynn’s take on “Eruption” below:
