Listen to Mastodon’s cover of “Stairway to Heaven”

Dedicated to their late manager, Nick John, and pressed on vinyl for Record Store Day.

Mastodon’s cover of “Stairway to Heaven,” released on vinyl specially for Record Store Day last Saturday, has made it online. Their rendition of the Led Zeppelin classic is dedicated to their late manager, who passed in September last year, and hence titled “Stairway to Nick John.”

“[John] was essentially the band’s dad. From our highest highs to our lowest lows, he was always there,” Mastodon said in a statement. “Every single move we made went through him first as our trust in him was marrow-deep. His favorite band besides us and Gojira was Led Zeppelin.”

The band performed “Stairway to Heaven” at John’s funeral, and after finding out Gojira’s Joe Duplantier had recorded it on his phone, decided to lay down a studio version and release both recordings on Record Store Day. Only 1,500 copies were pressed, and all proceeds were donated to pancreatic cancer research.
