Lamb of God have shared a brand-new song, “Checkmate,” the first preview of their upcoming self-titled eighth studio album.

The four-minute-long track starts out with a mellow guitar riff before bursting at the seams with rumbling drums and vocalist Randy Blythe’s roars. “Watch the gears grind off their teeth / The screeching halt machine digging heels in disbelief,” he sings. “Two reactional identities, opposing policies / A bait and switch routine.” The song arrived alongside a gritty video that brings to life the album’s clockwork cover art.

“‘Checkmate’ brings together all the components of the Lamb of God sound that we’ve been developing over the last two decades, but with the ambition and ferocity that comes with the start of a new chapter for our band,” guitarist Mark Morton said in a statement. “Re-energized and reignited, this is Lamb of God 2020. We’ve never been more excited.”

Lamb of God’s new eponymous LP is set to arrive May 8 on Nuclear Blast. It is the band’s first record with Art Cruz, who joined LoG last year after longtime drummer Chris Adler exited the group. Check out the video for “Checkmate” below:
