Lamb of God have shared a new cover of hardcore pioneers Bad Brains’ “I Against I,” featuring Fever 333 vocalist Jason Aalon Butler.
The metal group previously covered “I Against I” for their 2018 cover album Legion: XX released under their original name, Burn the Priest. Lamb of God’s new rendition, recorded in isolation, arrives as the latest installment in their Live Quarantine Video series. The group recapture the vigorous sound of Bad Brains’ original with the help of Butler, who tackles the cover with gusto.
“The idea to cover ‘I Against I’ goes back at least 20 years to a camping trip the band was on,” Lamb of God vocalist Randy Blythe explained in a statement. “Mark [Morton, Lamb of God guitarist] and I were sitting in the back of our buddy’s Jeep ripping through the mountains, Bad Brains was cranking on the stereo, and I was singing along to that particular song. Mark looked over at me and said, ‘We should cover that tune.’ So we thought about it for a couple of decades and finally got around to doing it.”
Blythe went on to reveal that he first saw Fever 333 at Ohio’s Sonic Temple festival and instantly fell in love with them, sending a message to Bad Brains bassist Darryl Jenifer that same afternoon urging him to check out Fever 333—making Butler an obvious addition when it came to a fresh cover.
