Gojira are back, announcing their new album Fortitude with lead single “Born for One Thing.”
“Born for One Thing” stands tall upon an exciting collection of colossal riffs, never truly settling into a groove before offering up another heavy rhythm. It opens with a tantalizing build-up of guitar harmonics and whiplike snare rolls before roaring into life as vocalist Joe Duplantier leads a visceral attack on consumerist values over a frantic double-kick beat.
The song’s message was inspired by Duplantier’s childhood spent reading texts written by Thai and Tibetan philosophers. “We have to practice detaching ourselves from everything, beginning with actual things,” he said in a statement.
“Own less possessions, and give what you don’t need away, because one day we’ll have to let everything go, and if we don’t, we’ll just become ghosts stuck between dimensions.”
The single arrived with a music video written and directed by Charles De Meyer. Filmed across France and Belgium, the clip follows an old man who admires exhibits at a natural history museum. Things take a turn as he pops a mysterious pill and transforms into a range of figures to evade security.
Fortitude will be Gojira’s first album since 2016’s Magma. It will arrive on April 30 via Roadrunner Records. Watch the video for “Born for One Thing” here:
