Laiho co-founded Children of Bodom with Raatikainen in 1993. Initially known as Inearthed, the band renamed themselves Children of Bodom to sign to Spinefarm Records. They released ten albums over the course of their career, becoming one of Finland’s best-selling artists of all time.

Children of Bodom announced their split in 2019, staging their final concert on December 15 that year. In a statement, Blacksmith, Wirman and Raatikainen shed light on their decision to leave the band, saying its five members “couldn’t find a shared viewpoint during these last few years,” as Metal Injection reported at the time.

After the dissolution of Children of Bodom, last year Laiho and fellow member Daniel Freyberg co-founded the supergroup Bodom After Midnight. News of Laiho’s passing was corroborated by Bodom After Midnight and their label Napalm Records.

“We are absolutely devastated and heartbroken for the sudden loss of our dear friend and band member,” reads their statement, which was signed by Freyberg, bassist Mitja Toivonen and drummer Waltteri Väyrynen.

The rock and metal world has paid tribute to Laiho, with Lamb of God’s Mark Morton, Marty Friedman, Trivium members, Nightwish, Megadeth’s David Ellefson and more taking to social media to remember him.
