Boris, Merzbow rework “Boris” by the Melvins

A cut off their forthcoming project ‘2R0I2P0.’

Japanese experimental trio Boris and frequent collaborator Merzbow are back with a cover of “Boris” by the Melvins, set to appear on their upcoming joint album 2R0I2P0.

The rework retains the original riff from Melvins’ 1991 track—which was the trio’s namesake—but Merzbow piles on layers of skin-crawling static and distortion to complement Boris’ hoarse, wailing vocals. The track dropped alongside an eerie visual depicting a shrouded figure backlit by garish strobe lights.

2R0I2P0 is out December 11 via Relapse Records, and is the latest album to come out of Boris’ longstanding creative partnership with Merzbow (aka noise musician Masami Akita), with whom they also produced Gensho four years ago. It also follows Boris’ last record No, released earlier this year, and Love & Evol from 2019.
