Bodom After Midnight announce new EP of Alexi Laiho’s final recordings

‘Paint the Sky with Blood’ will be the group’s first major release.

Bodom After Midnight, the band founded by Alexi Laiho, have announced the new EP Paint the Sky with Blood, which will feature the late guitarist’s final recordings.

The EP will contain new tracks “Payback’s a Bitch” and “Paint the Sky with Blood” alongside a cover of Dissection’s “Where Dead Angels Lie” from their 1995 album Storm of the Light’s Bane. These are the last recordings Laiho completed before his death in January at the age of 41. Though no specific cause of death was given, a statement issued by his former bandmates revealed that the Finnish artist had “suffered from long-term health issues during his last years.”

Laiho co-founded Bodom After Midnight in 2020 with guitarist Daniel Freyberg after the dissolution of their previous group Children of Bodom. The band, rounded out by drummer Waltteri Väyrynen and bassist Mitja Toivonen, had signed to Napalm Records last December, with initial plans to release a debut album this year.

“Like ourselves, Alexi was beyond stoked about these songs and anxious to get these out so we are happy that we can fulfil his wish,” Bodom After Midnight said of the EP in a statement. “Needless to say that we are honored and proud to be a part of his very last creative work and unleash it the way he wanted it to. It’s time to let the beast out of the cage one more time as a celebration of Alexi’s music, legacy and the man himself.”

Paint the Sky with Blood will be released on April 23 via Napalm Records.
