KATIE—real name Kim Seo-hyon—has shared her latest EP, Our Time is Blue.
The six-track affair, the follow-up to her debut album Log, showcases KATIE’s distinct R&B sensibilities and features a collaboration with Leven Kali. Kicking off the EP is the silky-smooth “Classic,” followed by lo-fi banger “Our Time.” Kali joins in on the third track “Blue,” layering on delicate harmonies that perfectly complement KATIE’s.
Later, the EP reaches a subtle climax on “Faux” featuring KATIE’s trademark feather-light, yet fulsome falsetto, then winds down with the mellow and aptly-titled closer, “Lullaby.”
The EP’s fourth track “Faux” caused a stir after KATIE revealed the song was inspired by “an experience with a record label,” according to Allkpop. “I thought everything went super well and we were getting ready to sign the paperwork, but everything fell through,” she explained in a statement. “I later learned that they were looking for a K-pop artist and I wasn’t really K-pop. They were interested at first, but later realized I wasn’t what they were looking for.”
The ambiguous statement led fans to speculate that the label she referred to was YG Entertainment, the agency with which she began her career after winning the fourth season of reality TV competition show K Pop Star in 2015. She has since moved on to AXIS, her current label.
