Drummer Yussef Dayes has shared a new live album, Welcome to the Hills.
The 12-track album was recorded during a Copenhagen show in July 2019, where Dayes was performing in a trio with longtime contributors Rocco Palladino on bass and Charlie Stacey handling keys. It ended up being the ensemble’s last show together prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and doubles as a vital snapshot of Dayes’ mesmerizing trio performances.
“There was something special about this performance,” Dayes said in a statement. “The raw energy, focus, determination & freedom to take our music to the next level. It feels more right than ever to release this live recording, as there have been no shows this year. So we want to give you, the listener, the chance to participate and enter the Yussef Dayes trio live experience.”
Earlier this year, Dayes released What Kinda Music with Tom Misch. The collaborative LP, which was the pair’s first on Blue Note Records, included “Nightrider” featuring Freddie Gibbs, “Kyiv” and “Lift Off.”
Dayes is also preparing a debut album for a 2021 release. While you wait for more details, listen to Welcome to the Hills here:
