British saxophonist Nubya Garcia has delivered a commanding performance for NPR’s long-running Tiny Desk Concert series.
In light of the pandemic, Garcia’s performance didn’t take place behind the usual location, which is the desk of Bob Boilen, host of the popular NPR show All Songs Considered. Instead, Garcia packed her band into a plant-filled room in Soup Studio, which is housed in a decommissioned floating lighthouse permanently situated on the River Thames in London.
Garcia played “Source,” “Pace” and “Boundless Beings,” all tracks from her solo debut album Source, released in August. Joining her for the rich, dynamic performance were keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones, double bassist Daniel Casmir, drummer Sam Jones and backing vocalists Richie Seivwright and Cassie Kinoshi.
