Watch Esperanza Spalding’s video for “How to (hair)”

A mesmerizing tribute to black hair and “God-given nappyness.”

Last month, Esperanza Spalding added four new songs to her latest project, 12 Little Spells, including the entrancing number “How to (hair).” Now, that song has gotten an equally mesmerizing video.

Spalding joins a group of 21 black women, each wearing their hair in different styles, in this black-and-white visual directed by Vincent Martell. They revel in their locks, curls and ringlets, breaking into full-throated screams when the song transitions out of its quiet introduction. It’s a beautiful accompaniment to Spalding’s evenly recited tribute to black hair and what she calls “God-given nappyness.”

“‘How to’… That was often a painful question growing up with all this loudness for hair,” Spalding said in a comment on the video’s YouTube page. “Hope the spell is a sort of magic elixir and celebratory affirmation that whatever your hair, it’s a perfect symphonic portrait of your lineage.”
