Butcher Brown have dropped an eye-catching video for their song “Gum in My Mouth.”
The clip takes its visual cues from the cover of Butcher Brown’s September album #KingButch, mixing vibrant illustrations with footage of each member performing their respective parts for “Gum in My Mouth.” Animator Toby Mortimer conjures a trippy experience as an endless array of textures, colors and shapes flow freely throughout the video.
“Gum in My Mouth,” taken from the album #KingButch, exemplifies the Richmond, Virginia outfit’s smooth mix of jazz, funk and hip hop. “All the guys in Butcher Brown are great players but also can think like producers,” #KingButch producer Chris Dunn revealed in a statement.
“For a few tracks, they brought in music from their live shows, some that were more than twelve minutes long. We discussed what the recipe should be, and they jumped right in trimming, shaping, adding, and finally fashioning a blend of rawness and lo-fi sophistication that was all their own. Watching it come together track by track, I believe #KingButch opens up an exciting new chapter for the band creatively.”
#KingButch, which dropped last month, is Butcher Brown’s first release to follow the 2018 EP Afrokuti: A Tribute to Fela. Watch the video for “Gum in My Mouth” below:
