Ariana Grande recently joined Thundercat during his Adult Swim Festival set last week to perform his single “Them Changes.”
The pop star made a surprise appearance to join the bassist in a funky rendition of “Them Changes” in front of a greenscreen displaying a variety of quirky animations. The performance quickly dissolved into a frenetic display of instrumental virtuosity as Thundercat, drummer JD Beck and pianist DOMi took turns to deliver mind-blowing solos.
Prior to her stunning performance with Thundercat, Grande had covered “Them Changes” back in 2018 for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge series. That year, she declared the 2015 song, which was included on Thundercat’s 2017 album Drunk, her “favorite song of the past year and a half.”
Grande’s ex-partner—and close friend of Thundercat—Mac Miller passed away of a drug overdose in 2018. In a new statement about the Adult Swim performance, Thundercat said, “it feels like Ariana and I are forever connected through Mac, and this is part of the healing process.”

Thundercat released his fourth studio album It is What it is back in April, and has followed up with a steady run of remixes and singles since, the most recent being Floating Points’ rework of “Fair Chance” and Smino and Guapdad 4000’s take on “Dragonball Durag.” As for Grande, the singer dropped her sixth studio album Positions last month after sharing its title track a mere week ahead of release.
