Vijay Iyer announces trio album with Linda May Han Oh, Tyshawn Sorey

Vijay Iyer Trio have announced their new album Uneasy with the release of lead single “Children of Flint.”

Joined by Linda May Han Oh on double bass and drummer Tyshawn Sorey, Iyer delivers an engrossing, dynamic composition. “Children of Flint” was inspired by the public health crisis in Flint, Michigan, in which the city’s drinking water was contaminated with lead and Legionnaires’ disease from 2014 until 2019.

“Due to gross negligence and systematic racism, the entire town’s drinking water supply was poisoned with lead,” Iyer said in a statement. “Thousands of children in that town, who are mostly African American, have been exposed to unsafe levels of lead, leading to widespread health issues, chronic illnesses and learning disabilities. This piece is dedicated to those children.” Iyer has said he will donate to the Flint Kids Fund and asks fans to follow his lead.

The first recording from Iyer, Oh and Sorey, Uneasy comes six years following Iyer’s last trio album, Break Stuff with Stephan Crump and Marcus Gilmore. The new record will feature some compositions written by Iyer some 20 years prior, as well as covers of Cole Porter’s Great American Songbook hit “Night and Day” and Geri Allen’s “Drummer Song.”

Uneasy will arrive on April 9 via ECM. Listen to “Children of Flint” below:
