Thundercat—real name Stephen Bruner—has announced his fourth studio album, It is What it is, with the new single “Black Qualls”.
On the track, Bruner blends psychedelic rock with groovy hip hop beats, with the help of The Internet’s Steve Lacy and funk icon Steve Arrington. “’Cause there’s no more livin’ in fear / No more livin’ in fear / If we don’t talk about it on the web,” he sings on the chorus.
In a statement, Thundercat described the song as “what it feels like to be [a young black American] right now… the weird ins and outs, we’re talking about those feelings.”
The new album, Bruner said, “is about love, loss, life and the ups and downs that come with that. It’s a bit tongue-in-cheek, but at different points in life you come across places that you don’t necessarily understand.”
It is What it is, co-produced by Bruner and Flying Lotus, arrives April 3 via Thundercat’s label Brainfeeder. The record will feature contributions from Childish Gambino, Ty Dolla $ign, BADBADNOTGOOD, Louis Cole and more.
