The Nels Cline Singers unveil “Beam/Spiral”

From their new album for Blue Note, ‘Share the Wealth.’

Wilco guitarist Nels Cline’s long-running jazz project The Nels Cline Singers have announced the new album Share the Wealth with the release of the single “Beam/Spiral.”

Share the Wealth will be Cline’s third album for Blue Note Records, following 2016’s Lovers and 2018’s Currents, Constellations. The iteration of The Nels Cline Singers on the new record comprises saxophonist Skerik, keyboardist Brian Marsella, bassist Trevor Dunn, drummer Scott Amendola and Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista.

This line-up of The Nels Cline Singers have never even played a live gig together, but they recorded Share the Wealth over the course of just two days at The Bunker in Brooklyn with Cline and Eli Crews co-producing.

“We recorded all these jams with the idea that I was going to take tiny fragments of them and create this kind of cut-and-paste, collaged, psychedelic record like an Os Mutantes record or something crazy like that,” Cline explained in a statement. “But when I listened back to these jams, I liked them so much that I wanted to keep them intact. And some of the most startling transitions, they’re not edits. They just happened in the course of these long improvisations in the studio, almost like magic.”
