Long-running jazz collective Sun Ra Arkestra have announced their first studio album in 20 years by releasing a rework of their 1979 song “Seductive Fantasy.”
As with the collective’s expansive discography, “Seductive Fantasy” settles comfortably in the vein of rich psychedelic jazz. The track originally appeared on the group’s On Jupiter three-track release under the moniker Sun Ra and His Intergalactic Myth Science Solar Arkestra. Artist Chad Van Gaalen’s accompanying symbolism-heavy animation only deepens that connection with pulsating waves of color that form an array of shapes across mind-bending surrealist landscapes.
The new Sun Ra Arkestra album, the follow-up to 1999’s Song for the Sun doesn’t have a title just yet. It was recorded at Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Soundworks studio under the careful direction of bandleader Marshall Allen, who stepped up to lead the group after its founder Sun Ra passed away in 1993.
Sun Ra Arkestra’s upcoming album will be released via Strut Records in early October. Watch the visual for the 2020 version of “Seductive Fantasy” below:
