Stream Kamasi Washington’s ‘Heaven and Earth’ companion film

‘As Told to G/D Thyself’ premiered at Sundance and is now available online.

Kamasi Washington’s latest short film, As Told to G/D Thyself, has finally arrived online.

The 22-minute film, which is intended as an accompaniment to his 2018 album Heaven and Earth, is now available to stream on Apple Music after premiering at Sundance Film Festival in January.

Washington started developing the film before the album was completed, working with a collective of five film professionals—cinematographer Bradford Young as well as filmmakers Terence Nance, Jenn Nkiru and Marc Thomas—known as The Ummah Chroma.

According to the film’s accompanying description on Apple Music, As Told to G/D Thyself was inspired by “the journey to understanding that you can shape the world into what you want it to be,” Washington said. Nevertheless, he added, “I wanted it to feel loose enough that people could create their own story within the story. It’s kind of like pieces of a puzzle that you can rearrange in different ways.”
