Stream ‘Connect,’ Charles Tolliver’s first album in 13 years

The New York-based trumpeter has returned.

Renowned jazz trumpeter Charles Tolliver has released Connect, his first album in 13 years.

After releasing his last album With Love in 2007 on Blue Note Records, Tolliver took his time to carefully construct a powerful follow-up with his new label Gearbox Records. His varied career helped influence Connect, which resulted in a powerful four-track release informed by his time as a label founder, self-taught musician and educator at New York’s School of Jazz and Contemporary Music.

“I like to rumble,” Tolliver said in a press statement about his improvisational skills. “I take the most difficult routes for improvisation. It’s easy to play a number of choruses effortlessly and never make a mistake, never break down. That’s no fun. You need to get in hot water by trying something out right from the jump.”

Connect was recorded in London last year with Tolliver’s band, the Charles Tolliver All Stars. It included Jesse Davis on alto saxophone, pianist Keith Brown, bassist Buster Williams and Lenny White on drums. British saxophonist Binker Golding also appears on two songs, “Copaestic” and the album closer “Suspicion.”
