Theon Cross is best known as the tuba player in Sons of Kemet, but he also occasionally puts out solo material, backed by Moses Boyd and Nubya Garcia. Yesterday, they put out a new track, “Panda Village.”
Their first release since the 2015 Aspirations EP, “Panda Village” (which was named after Kung Fu Panda 3, Cross divulged to The Quietus) begins with a beguiling drum pattern from Boyd and the low squibs of Cross’ tuba, before Garcia enters with her expressive tenor sax. The chemistry between the three, who’ve been working together since 2014, is palpable.
