Roy Ayers releases first new album in nearly a decade

A collaboration with Adrian Younge and A Tribe Called Quest’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad.

Jazz-funk legend Roy Ayers has released his first new album in nine years: Roy Ayers JID002, a full-length collaboration with Adrian Younge and A Tribe Called Quest’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad.

The record is the second in Younge and Muhammad’s Jazz is Dead album series, which began as a concert in 2017 masterminded by Los Angeles promoter Andrew Lojero. Younge and Muhammad—who make music as The Midnight Hour and composed the score for Luke Cage seasons one and two—released the first Jazz is Dead album earlier this year. It featured Ayers alongside other jazz and bossa nova luminaries like Gary Bartz, Brian Jackson, Doug Carn, Marcos Valle and more.

Per Pitchfork, Ayers, Younge and Muhammad co-wrote all eight tracks on Roy Ayers JID002—the first release on the Jazz is Dead label—and recorded the album at Younge’s Linear Labs in Los Angeles. The album is Ayers’ first since his 2011 record King of the Vibes.
