Nubya Garcia announces debut album with title track “Source”

A full-length statement, following two acclaimed EPs.

London saxophonist Nubya Garcia has released “Source,” the title track of her freshly announced debut album.

The sprawling 12-minute track features three members of acclaimed Afrobeat outfit KOKOROKO: trumpeter Ms Maurice (aka Sheila Maurice-Grey), saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi and trombonist Richie Seivwright. Maurice-Grey and Kinoshi also play with Garcia in the septet Nérija, who released their debut album Blume last year.

Both “Source” and “Pace,” which was released in June, will feature on Garcia’s first-ever LP. Source, an entirely instrumental record, was co-produced by Garcia and Kwes. Other collaborators on the album include La Perla and Akenya.

Garcia has put out two EPs under her own name: Nubya’s 5ive and When We Are, both released in 2018. But as is par for the course in the thriving London jazz scene, Garcia has been steadily prolific as a collaborator and ensemble member. Besides Nérija, she also plays in the group Maisha. She previously contributed to a Jean-Michel Basquiat tribute compilation and has collaborated with Sons of Kemet’s Theon Cross and Makaya McCraven, just to name a few.

Source arrives August 21 on Concord Jazz. Hear the title track now:
