Today, London septet Nérija release Blume, their debut studio album and first release on Domino.
Nérija comprise saxophonists Nubya Garcia and Cassie Kinoshi, guitarist Shirley Tetteh, bassist Rio Kai, trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey, trombonist Rosie Turton and drummer Lizy Exell. Blume is their second release, following the self-titled EP they released in 2016.
The group recorded Blume live at London’s Soup Studios over the course of a week in January 2018. It was produced by kwes, who said in a statement that he aimed to channel the vibe of Teo Macero and Stanley Tonkel’s records with Miles Davis during his Columbia years, “thinking ‘forward’ as they did, but with this band; to capture the controlled chaos and frame it with a timeless elegance.”
Did kwes—and Nérija—succeed? We think so. Stream Blume here:
