South African pianist Nduduzo Makhathini has released “Yehlisan’uMoya” (“Spirit Come Down”), the first taste of his forthcoming album, Modes of Communication: Letters from the Underworlds.

The passionate tune features vocals from Omagugu Makhathini, Nduduzo’s wife. Saxophonists Logan Richardson and Linda Sikhakhane, trumpeter Ndabo Zulu, drummer Ayanda Sikade and percussionist Gontse Makhene also play on the track.

“The song represents a search for the light of the ancestral realms and an acknowledgment of a parallel existence between a world we see and those unseen,” Makhathini explained in a press statement.

“Yehlisan’uMoya” is the first taste of Modes of Communication: Letters from the Underworlds, Nduduzo’s first album on Blue Note Records, due out 2020. The record is the follow-up to 2017’s Ikhambi.
