South London drummer Moses Boyd has released his debut album, Dark Matter, his first release as bandleader.
On the 10-track record, Boyd combines his jazz background with contemporary influences such as Afrobeats, grime and electronic music. “I still love jazz, but [Dark Matter] is something different,” Boyd previously said in a press release.
“There’s been no pressure or expectation of anything. There was no immediate need to do anything, so I was really free. A very liberating experience,” he continued. “Many different sounds, setups, places and music taken from different places and sessions but I feel like finally it sounds like I’m a producer that also plays jazz.”
Boyd previously previewed the record with the singles “Only You” and the Poppy Ajudha-assisted “Shades of You.” The album also features contributions from the drummer’s mentor Gary Crosby OBE, producer and keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones, South African musician Nonku Phiri and more.
