Veteran Mexican muso and jazz drummer Tino Contreras has announced his new album La Noche de los Dioses with the release of lively lead single “El Sacrificio.”
The seven tracks on the record were written and recorded in Mexico City earlier this year. Due out next month on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings, it continues Contreras’ burgeoning relationship with the London DJ and jazz tastemaker, who reissued the drummer’s 1978 album Musica Infinita on his newly minted Arc Records label in January.
“El Sacrificio” aims to capture the awe and wonderment of Contreras’ decades of globetrotting, while elsewhere on La Noche de los Dioses he explores Aztec mythology—which also deeply influenced Musica Infinita. He’s backed on the record by seven musicians, including his son Valentino Contreras on the bass.
