Matthew Halsall releases “Canopy & Stars”

A magical new cut from ‘Salute to the Sun.’

Matthew Halsall has released “Canopy & Stars,” a magical new track from his upcoming album Salute to the Sun.

The record will be the Gondwana Records founder’s first as bandleader since 2015’s Into Forever. It marks the debut of his new band: longtime collaborator Gavin Barras on bass, Matt Cliffe on flute and saxophone, Maddie Herbert on harp, Liviu Gheorghe on piano, Alan Taylor on drums and Jack McCarthy on percussion.

Their first studio recording together was wholly improvised, and was inspired by ambient rainforest and jungle field recordings. In a statement, Halsall described Salute to the Sun as a “positive earthy album” that balances playfulness with a connection to nature.
