Makaya McCraven has remixed the title track of Nubya Garcia’s debut album, Source.
McCraven’s hypnotic rework of the song runs smoothly on syncopated drums, dreamy brass and a jaunty piano progression. By rearranging Garcia’s composition into a compact listening experience saturated with instruments, McCraven highlights the complexity of the former’s songwriting. The pair initially collaborated on McCraven’s 2018 LP Universal Beings.
“We were always bumping into each other at a bunch of the same festivals on our tours,” Garcia said of McCraven on Instagram. “He invited me over to the US to do some shows for his album, which were unforgettable experiences! I asked him to do a remix of my track Source—and I love how he flipped this track so much… thank you Makaya for your musicianship & work ethic that I’ve got to witness these past few years.”
Garcia recently made waves with her NPR Tiny Desk Concert performance. The alto saxophonist delivered a commanding set within London’s Soup Studios, a decommissioned floating lighthouse venue located on the River Thames.
McCraven, on the other hand, appeared alongside Sons of Kemet on Adult Swim’s jazz compilation New Jazz Century with “Crash Course”.
