Makaya McCraven announces album of ‘Universal Beings’ outtakes

Plus a documentary about the making of the album.

Makaya McCraven has announced an album of outtakes from the sessions for his 2018 album Universal Beings and a documentary about the making of the record.

The first preview of the album, titled Universal Beings E&F Sides, is “Mak Attack”—a gloriously kinetic, all-too-brief showcase of McCraven’s drumming skill.

“Mak Attack” and the other 13 tracks on the E&F Sides were cut from the album sessions, prepared and produced by McCraven as the soundtrack to Mark Pallman’s Universal Beings documentary. The film follows the musician to the four cities—London, Los Angeles, New York and Chicago—where the album took shape in live sessions with a number of acclaimed musicians, including Nubya Garcia, Brandee Younger, Shabaka Hutchings and Jeff Parker.

Both the album and documentary are due out July 31. They follow the February release of We’re New Again, McCraven’s rework of Gil Scott-Heron’s final album I’m New Here.
